History

The creation of volleyball as a game sport dates back to the late 19th century. The first ever volleyball match was played on February 9, 1895 at the gym of the Association of Young Christians in Holyoke (Massachusetts, USA).

On the Belarusian land, volleyball began to develop in the late 20s of the last century. The impetus for this was the creation of volleyball sections in Minsk and regional centers.

Belarusian volleyball brought up a galaxy of famous masters, whose game was the standard for many generations of athletes in the republic, and the best of them shown in the various national teams of the USSR on the international stage.

 

National volleyball teams

FIVB World Ranking – Men : 48th

European Men’s National Team Ranking : 23th

The Belarus men’s national volleyball team represents the Belarus in the international volleyball competitions. The governing body is the Volleyball Federation Of The Rep. Of Belarus.

Belarusian men began to perform later at the European Championships (since 2001) and so far cannot boast of equally high achievements. Their best result is 15th place in 2013. Twice, the national team made its way to the final stage of the continental championship, and in 2019. did it the third time.

 

Women’s National Team

For the first time, the national team of the Republic of Belarus performed at the main European championship in 1993. Then the women’s national team went to the European Championship and took the high 8th place among 28 teams. The women’s team has always been distinguished by high results and four times hit the top 10 strongest teams in Europe. Two years later, the team confirmed its 8th place, and at the last continental forum it achieved the highest result in its history – 7th place among 36 teams.

 

The Belarusian championship

The Belarusian championship is held among 9 men’s teams, is also divided into two divisions, the same as for women’s championship.

The tournament is quite high level but at the moment only a few teams are really fighting for the championship.

In recent years, Stroitel Minsk, Shakhtar Soligorsk and Energia have become champions and other teams cannot compete with them at the same level.

As for women’s teams, Kommunalnik, Minsk and Zhemchuzhina have dominated for many years straight.
