Belarus established diplomatic relations with Eswatini

Belarus and Eswatinin -diplomatic relations

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, a joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the Kingdom of Eswatini was signed in Pretoria on 4 June.

The ceremony was attended by Ambassador of Belarus to South Africa Igor Bely and High Commissioner of the Embassy of Eswatini in South Africa Lindiwe Kunene.

According to the report, “this event opens up opportunities for the development of the whole range of relations between the two countries in the field of political dialog, promotion of trade and economic cooperation, establishment of ties in education, health care, science and technology, cultural exchange. 

"For a long time, Eswatini remained on the extremely short list of countries that do not have diplomatic relations with Belarus.  Changes in the international and regional situation, as well as active actions taken by the Belarusian diplomacy to promote the idea of mutually beneficial cooperation of African partners with our country against the background of neo-colonial approaches of some international players convince more and more leaders of African states in the prospect of developing relations with Belarus,” reads the Foreign Ministry website.

Eswatini is a state in South Africa, former Transvaal protectorate and British colony of Swaziland.

An independent country since the 1960s. It is a monarchy ruled by members of the Dlamini dynasty. Eswatini is ruled by King Mswati III, and his family heads the government, parliament and other major organs of power. Political parties are banned in the country of about 1.1 million people.

The economy is based on agriculture, coal and asbestos are extracted. There is a rather large production of cellulose. The main foreign trade partner is South Africa.
